The Art of Being Touched.. A Hammam in Marrakech

Steam, black soap, rosewater, and the exquisite pleasure of letting someone else take care of you.

There is something incredibly sensual about the thought of Marrakech.

Maybe it’s the colors. The terracotta walls glowing beneath the afternoon sun. The deep blues and greens of intricate mosaic tiles. The beautiful carved wooden doors that make me wonder what’s happening on the other side.

Or perhaps it’s the fragrances.

Cumin, cinnamon, saffron, fresh mint, orange blossoms, and the intoxicating scent of roses.

I imagine wandering through the medina, losing myself among the market stalls, running my fingers across embroidered fabrics, admiring brass lanterns, and stopping far too often to taste something delicious.

But there’s one particular Moroccan experience that has captured my imagination.

The hammam.

Not simply a spa treatment. Not another facial, massage, or expensive jar promising eternal youth.

Something older. More intimate. A ritual that has been part of Moroccan life for generations.

And the more I learn about it, the more I realize that what fascinates me isn’t simply what happens to the skin.

It’s what happens when you allow yourself to be cared for.

Because some of us have become exceptionally good at giving.

Giving our time. Our attention. Our affection. Our energy.

We know how to anticipate someone’s needs before they even ask. We know how to make a meal feel like an occasion, turn a house into a sanctuary, and offer comfort when someone else’s world is falling apart.

But receiving?

Now that can be an entirely different experience.

And I wonder what it would feel like to enter a beautiful room, close my eyes, and have absolutely nothing expected of me.

Except to be there.

Behind the Beautiful Doors

My hammam experience begins at a beautiful riad tucked inside the old medina.

From the street, the entrance might appear modest. Just another heavy wooden door along a narrow passageway.

But beyond it?

An interior courtyard filled with sunlight, an ornate fountain, lush greenery, and the gentle sound of running water.

There might be a glass of fresh mint tea waiting, served in one of those beautiful little Moroccan glasses that make even drinking tea feel ceremonial.

And perhaps a small dish of dates…. I would absolutely have a date… Possibly three.

After all, I am here to indulge.

Eventually, I would be led toward the hammam, where the air becomes warmer and the outside world begins to disappear.

Traditional Moroccan hammams are often communal bathhouses, with separate arrangements for men and women. They’re places of cleanliness, community, and care, not simply luxury experiences created for visitors.

The private, beautifully decorated hammams found in some Marrakech spas offer a different interpretation of that tradition.

Both have their place.

For this particular fantasy, I’m choosing warm marble, soft lighting, beautiful bowls filled with natural ingredients, and a woman who understands exactly what she’s doing.

I want the entire experience.

The First Touch: Steam and Surrender

The first thing I notice is the warmth.

Not the aggressive heat that makes you desperate to escape, but the kind that gradually encourages your shoulders to relax.

The air is moist. The marble beneath me is warm.

There is no telephone ringing. No schedule waiting to be rearranged. No problem that needs my immediate attention.

Just warmth…. And breathing…. I think I would have to remind myself not to rush.

Isn’t that interesting?

Even when we’re supposed to be relaxing, we sometimes treat relaxation as another assignment.

Am I doing this correctly?

How much longer?

What comes next?

But in my hammam, I decide that I’m not going to manage the experience.

I’m going to experience it.

The steam surrounds me, and I imagine my thoughts gradually becoming quieter.

For once, I don’t need to hold everything together.

I can simply let the warmth hold me.

Black Soap and the Beauty of Letting Go

Then comes the black soap.

Moroccan savon beldi is unlike the pretty little bars of soap we might display beside a bathtub.

It’s a soft, dark olive-based paste, traditionally made through a soapmaking process using olive ingredients and an alkaline agent.

It isn’t particularly glamorous to look at.

But neither is an avocado until you cut it open and discover all that beautiful green goodness.

And I do love a good avocado.

The soap is spread over warm, damp skin and allowed to sit briefly before being rinsed away.

Then comes the kessa, a textured exfoliating glove used to remove loosened dead skin.

The experienced hands of the attendant moving confidently and rhythmically.

Arms. Shoulders. Back. Legs…. Nothing hurried…. Nothing careless.

There is something deeply comforting about being cared for by someone who knows her craft.

And I begin thinking about how much we carry in our bodies.

Not in some mysterious sense that every emotion is physically trapped beneath our skin, but in the ordinary, very real way that stress changes how we breathe, move, rest, and hold ourselves.

Sometimes my shoulders tell the truth long before my mouth does.

And perhaps that’s part of what makes this experience so appealing.

I wouldn’t have to explain anything.

I could just be.

Rosewater, Argan Oil, and a Little Bit of Heaven

The next part of my experience involves one of my favorite things.

Fragrance…. Not anything overpowering…. but… Something delicate.

Rosewater. Orange blossom. Maybe the earthy scent of ghassoul clay, a mineral-rich Moroccan clay often used in traditional beauty treatments.

And finally, argan oil.

Beautiful, golden Moroccan argan oil, massaged gently into clean skin.

I emerge from the hammam wrapped in a soft robe, my skin feeling smooth, my hair loosely gathered, and my entire body deliciously relaxed.

I would want to sit somewhere beautiful afterward.

Perhaps beneath an orange tree in the courtyard.

No rushing to get dressed.

No checking messages.

Just a glass of something cool, a little fruit, and the pleasure of being completely present.

And maybe, just maybe, I would order another treatment.

Because why not?

There are worse things a woman can do than spend an afternoon being pampered.

The Astrology of Receiving

Abstract painting of four swirling floral forms in pastel and earthy colors

Now, you know I couldn’t experience something like this, even in my imagination, without bringing astrology into the conversation.

And this experience feels deliciously Venusian.

Venus rules pleasure, beauty, sensuality, attraction, and our relationship with what we value.

In traditional astrology, Venus rules both Taurus and Libra.

Taurus reminds us that we have bodies for a reason.

To taste…. To touch…. To smell…. To enjoy and …To experience the physical world rather than simply move through it.

Libra brings another dimension.

Beauty. Harmony. Relationships. The graceful exchange between giving and receiving.

And as a Libra Sun and Venus woman, I find that particularly fascinating.

I love creating beauty for other people.

A beautiful meal. A romantic atmosphere. A meaningful experience. Something thoughtful that makes someone feel special.

But Libra’s lesson isn’t to keep giving until the scales collapse.

It’s to understand balance.

And then there’s my Scorpio Rising and Mars in Scorpio.

Scorpio understands that touch isn’t always superficial.

Sometimes allowing another person close requires trust.

Not every touch is welcome. Not every experience is comfortable. And surrender should always be a choice.

But when care is offered respectfully, and boundaries are honored, receiving can become its own beautiful form of intimacy.

My Leo Moon?

Well, she has absolutely no objection to being treated like royalty for an afternoon.

Preferably with beautiful surroundings and something delicious afterward.

Of course, the Moon also belongs in this conversation.

Astrologically, the Moon symbolizes nourishment, comfort, emotional needs, and the ways we seek security.

And that leads me to an interesting question.

What if receiving care were something we practiced before we reached exhaustion?

What if pleasure didn’t have to be earned?

What if beauty were allowed to be part of an ordinary Tuesday?

And what if we stopped treating our own needs as interruptions?

That’s the kind of astrology I love.

Not simply predicting what might happen.

But using its symbolism to ask better questions about how we want to live.

The Numerology of Water, Beauty, and the Number Six

I love looking at the numbers surrounding an experience, too.

For this story, I’m drawn to the number 6.

In numerology, six is associated with beauty, harmony, nurturing, home, love, and responsibility.

It has a very Venusian quality.

But the shadow of six is fascinating.

Sometimes nurturing becomes overgiving.

Responsibility becomes obligation.

And loving everyone else becomes an excuse to neglect ourselves.

The medicine, symbolically speaking, is balance.

Not less love…. More reciprocity.

And for someone with my Life Path 22/4, a number often associated with building, responsibility, and turning visions into something tangible, I find the idea of receiving especially meaningful.

Perhaps the most important things we build aren’t always businesses, homes, or grand plans.

Sometimes we’re building a relationship with ourselves that feels safe enough to rest.

And that may be the most luxurious foundation of all.

A Frequency for Softening

I know the word frequency gets used in all sorts of ways.

Sometimes scientifically. Sometimes spiritually. Sometimes as a metaphor for how we’re feeling.

I enjoy exploring all of those possibilities while remembering that they’re not interchangeable.

For my hammam-inspired ritual, I would choose music tuned or labeled at 528 Hz, a frequency often associated in contemporary sound-healing circles with transformation and love.

There’s no reliable evidence that 528 Hz itself repairs DNA, clears trauma, or produces special healing effects.

But music can influence mood, and a gentle, beautiful soundscape can make a relaxing ritual feel even more immersive.

I would play soft instrumental music, perhaps with an oud, flowing water, and a slow, steady rhythm.

Nothing distracting…. Nothing demanding…. Just enough sound to create an atmosphere.

Then I would breathe slowly and imagine myself releasing the need to manage every moment.

Not because a particular frequency is magically doing the work.

But because I am giving myself permission to be still.

And that, to me, is its own kind of magic.

Master Life Path 33 | The Frequency of Sacred Nurturing

Your instinct is to comfort, teach, and love. Here, the lesson reverses. Let yourself be held by kindness, beauty, and care without needing to give anything in return.

After the Hammam, We Eat

Now, I don’t know about you, but an afternoon of steam, bathing, and beautiful oils would absolutely leave me thinking about food.

And Marrakech is not a place where I would willingly skip a meal.

I imagine finding a lovely courtyard restaurant with tiled walls, leafy plants, and a table covered in small dishes.

First, Moroccan salads.

Perhaps zaalouk, that delicious combination of cooked eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, cumin, and paprika.

Warm bread for scooping up every last bit.

Then a fragrant tagine.

Maybe lamb with prunes and almonds, where sweet and savory meet in that beautiful way I love.

Or chicken with preserved lemon and olives.

I would taste everything.

And because I have a particular affection for citrus, I would finish with fresh orange slices sprinkled with cinnamon and a little orange blossom water.

Simple…. Fragrant…. Beautiful.

A reminder that extraordinary food doesn’t always require complicated ingredients.

Sometimes it just requires someone who understands how flavors belong together.

Three Recipes to Bring Marrakech Home

1. My Marrakech-Inspired Zaalouk

A smoky eggplant and tomato dish for warm bread, grilled fish, or a beautiful mezze table.

Ingredients

  • 1 large eggplant
  • 3 ripe tomatoes, grated or finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • A pinch of cayenne, if you like a little heat
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley and cilantro
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Method

Roast the eggplant at 425°F for approximately 30–40 minutes, until soft. Allow it to cool slightly, then scoop out the flesh.

In a skillet, warm the olive oil and garlic. Add the tomatoes, cumin, paprika, and cayenne.

Cook until the tomatoes soften and begin to thicken.

Add the eggplant and mash everything together, allowing the flavors to mingle for another 10 minutes.

Finish with herbs and lemon juice.

Serve warm or at room temperature with crusty bread.

Personally, I would also love this beside a piece of beautifully grilled fish.

2. Orange Blossom, Cinnamon, and Honey Oranges

A simple dessert that tastes like sunshine.

Ingredients

  • 3 sweet oranges
  • 1 teaspoon orange blossom water, food-grade
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A few chopped pistachios
  • Fresh mint leaves

Method

Peel the oranges and slice them into beautiful rounds.

Arrange on a serving plate.

Mix the orange blossom water with honey and drizzle lightly over the fruit.

Sprinkle with cinnamon, pistachios, and mint.

Chill briefly before serving.

I would eat this in a courtyard garden, preferably while wearing something flowing and fabulous.

But my kitchen table will do nicely until Marrakech calls.

3. My Rosewater and Argan Hammam-Inspired Cleansing Ritual

An easy way to bring the sensory pleasure of a hammam home without making soap from scratch.

Authentic Moroccan black soap requires proper soapmaking chemistry, including a caustic alkali. For this home ritual, I prefer purchasing a properly formulated, unscented savon beldi and making the experience my own.

Rich black moroccan beldi soap rests in a hammered copper bowl next to a kessa glove, ready for hammam spa.

What you’ll need

  • 1–2 tablespoons prepared Moroccan black soap
  • A soft washcloth or kessa glove
  • Warm water
  • 1 teaspoon cosmetic-grade argan oil
  • 1 tablespoon cosmetic-grade rosewater, preferably fragrance-free
  • A clean, soft towel

Method

Begin with a comfortably warm shower for several minutes.

Massage a thin layer of black soap over damp body skin, avoiding the face and delicate areas.

Follow the product instructions, generally allowing a few minutes before rinsing.

If your skin tolerates exfoliation, gently use a damp kessa glove or soft washcloth. There is no need to scrub aggressively.

Rinse thoroughly.

Pat the skin dry and apply a few drops of argan oil to slightly damp skin.

If you enjoy rosewater, lightly mist it over your arms or décolletage before moisturizing, provided your skin tolerates it.

Always patch-test unfamiliar products, and avoid exfoliating irritated, sunburned, or broken skin. Very hot steam isn’t necessary, and anyone prone to dizziness or heat intolerance can enjoy a warm-shower version instead.

Then wrap yourself in something soft.

And please, don’t immediately start cleaning the bathroom.

That defeats the entire purpose.

A Little Magic: The Ritual of Receiving

For this ritual, I would choose a Friday.

Venus’s day.

I would place a small bowl of rose petals beside the bathtub, perhaps with a piece of rose quartz nearby.

Not because the crystal has scientifically established healing powers, but because I love the symbolism.

Rose quartz reminds me of tenderness.

And tenderness is something I think we should practice with ourselves more often.

I would light a candle somewhere safely away from towels and water, play gentle music, and take a few moments to write in my journal.

What have I been giving that I also need to receive?

Then…

Where have I confused being needed with being loved?

And finally…

What would change if I allowed care, pleasure, and beauty to be ordinary parts of my life?

I wouldn’t demand an immediate answer.

Some questions need time to unfold.

And some answers arrive when we’re doing something completely unexpected.

Like… Cooking…. Traveling…. Watching the sunset…. Or sitting quietly after a long, beautiful bath.

The Art of Being Touched

The more I think about the hammam experience, the more I realize that the word touch holds so many meanings.

There is the touch of warm water against skin.

The touch of an experienced attendant’s hands.

The touch of a soft robe.

The touch of sunlight through a courtyard window.

But there are other kinds of touch, too…. A thoughtful conversation…. A beautiful piece of music.

A meal someone prepares because they know exactly what you love.

A hand reaching for yours without being asked.

A moment when someone notices you’re tired and quietly takes something off your plate.

Sometimes the most sensual experiences have very little to do with seduction.

They have everything to do with attention.

And perhaps that’s what I find so irresistible about the idea of a hammam in Marrakech.

For a little while, I wouldn’t be responsible for creating the experience.

I would be the woman receiving it.

And I think I’d like that very much.

Because I don’t want a life where beauty only happens when I travel.

I want to bring it home.

I want the fragrant oils, the beautiful meals, the soft music, the laughter, the romance, the mystery, and the pleasure of simply being alive.

I want to give generously.

And receive graciously.

I want to love deeply without disappearing inside that love.

I want to experience the world with every one of my senses.

And most of all, I want to remember that taking care of myself isn’t something I do after I’ve finished taking care of everyone else.

It’s part of the life I’m creating.

One beautiful experience at a time.

Before You Leave

If you could spend an entire afternoon being cared for, with no responsibilities, no expectations, and absolutely nothing to prove, what would you choose?

A hammam in Marrakech?

A private thermal bath in Iceland?

A flower-filled spa in Bali?

Or perhaps a beautiful afternoon at home, with the door closed, the telephone silent, and your favorite meal waiting afterward?

I’d love to know.

Whether you’re a fiery Aries Moon craving adventure, a sensual Taurus Moon dreaming of fragrant oils, or a Life Path 22 learning to receive the beauty you’ve worked so hard to create, Marrakech offers a different story for every traveler.

The magic isn’t that the city changes who you are.

It’s that a new place can invite you to experience parts of yourself you haven’t made enough room for.

So tell me, what’s your Moon sign and Life Path number? And what do you think Marrakech would awaken in you?

And if this story made you crave a little more beauty, pleasure, and magic in your everyday life, stay close.

There are so many extraordinary places, flavors, rituals, and stories I want us to explore together.

Some will take us halfway around the world.

Others might bring us a little closer to ourselves.

With love, curiosity, and a little magic,

Asa 💜

Because a beautiful life is meant to be felt & To Feel Good is to Feel God
